SUMMARY:Kwanzaa
DESCRIPTION:Kwanzaa History\nKwanzaa is an African-American and Pan-African celebration of family\, community and culture. Kwanzaa\, a week-long cultural festival from the 26th of December to the 1st of January that climaxes in feasts and gift giving\, was initially established to unite African-Americans with their African roots and heritage. Nguzo Saba\, the seven principles that guide the holiday\, is central to Kwanzaa as a different principle is emphasized every day during the celebration. Celebrants often dress in traditional Pan-African clothing and decorate their homes in African artwork. \nKwanzaa was created in 1965 by Dr. Maulana Karenga\, a major figure in the Black Power movement\, with the intention of providing African Americans with a link to their ancestral heritage. Karenga aimed to bring together African-Americans as a community through the combination of various aspects of other celebrations such as Thanksgiving\, Christmas and African Yam Festivals. Since Kwanzaa is a cultural holiday\, not a religious one; it can be celebrated by Africans from all religious backgrounds.

SUMMARY:Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Christmas History\nChristmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. For modern Christians it also starts a 12-day Christmas season that begins on December 25th and ends on January 5th. Churches celebrate Christmas with services on Christmas Eve and often midnight masses. \nWhile the holiday is religious in origin\, many cultures\, even those without Christian ideologies\, celebrate this holiday. This celebration often centers around Santa Claus\, a mythical figure dressed in a red suit\, based on Saint Nicholas. Tradition has it that on Christmas morning\, Santa brings gifts for children who have been good and coal for those who have been naughty.

SUMMARY:Hanukkah start
DESCRIPTION:Hanukkah History\nChanukah (Hebrew: חנוכה) is an eight day Jewish festival\, also known as the festival of lights. On each day a Menorah (an eight branched candelabra) is lit with an ascending number of candles to match the day. The reason for Chanukah is based on the story of the Maccabees battle with the Greeks. It is told that one pure bottle of olive oil lasted for eight days in the Holy Temple. It should have lasted only for the first day.

SUMMARY:Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day History\nPearl Harbor Remembrance Day seeks to honor the victims of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor\, an American Naval Station. The attack is often cited as the catalyst for American involvement in the Second World War\, given that President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan the following day. \nAt 8am on December 7th\, 1941\, without prior warning\, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked a Naval Station at Pearl Harbor\, located on Oahu\, Hawaii. The base was attacked by 353 Japanese fighter planes. In total\, 2\,403 people perished\, another 1\,178 were injured\, four U.S. Navy battleships were sunk and 188 aircrafts were destroyed. The aim of the attack was to immobilize the U.S. Pacific Fleet\, which would allow Japan to advance into Malaya and Dutch East Indies. On August 23\, 1994\, the United States Congress passed Public Law 103-308 to designate December 7 of each year as the National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

SUMMARY:Columbus Day
DESCRIPTION:Columbus Day History \nColumbus Day is the celebration of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12\, 1492. Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who discovered the Americas for the Spanish King in 1492. King Ferdinand of Spain sponsored the expedition west in the hopes of sailing to India. In August of 1492\, Columbus set off into the Atlantic with three ships\, the Nina\, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Two months later he would set foot on the Bahamas and establish settlements on Hispanola Island (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Upon his return to Spain\, he spoke of gold in the New World and thus the Americas were opened up for European colonization. \nIn 1937\, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared October 12th every year as Columbus Day. In the US\, Columbus Day is celebrated by all US states except for Hawaii\, South Dakota and Alaska. Columbus Day now occurs on the second Monday in October each year.

SUMMARY:Yom Kippur
DESCRIPTION:Yom Kippur History \nYom Kippur (Day of Atonement\, Hebrew: יום כיפור) is the last day to atone our sins of the Ten Days of Repentance\, which start on the New Year (Rosh Hashanah). This is a fast mentioned in the Bible and the punishment mentioned for not keeping this fast is excommunication. \nJews seek to ‘purify their souls’ on this day\, by abstaining from common pleasures. Yom Kippur is celebrated by most all Jewish denominations. It is a fast day from the eve until the next day nightfall (twenty five hours). No food or drink is permissible. It is a day on which Jews ‘afflict the soul’\, which includes wearing only non-leather shoes\, not combing one’s hair and no marital relations. \nFor many Orthodox Jews\, most of Yom Kippur is spent in prayer in the Synagogue. Five prayer services are held (as opposed to the normal three daily prayers).
